The 8th Annual Trumbull County Special Olympics Invitational brought together over 100 athletes from five different schools across the region, all united by a shared mission: to promote inclusion, achievement, and sportsmanship. Held on a vibrant Saturday morning in Girard, the event was a celebration of dedication and heart, honoring the legacy of Randy Suchanek while spotlighting the incredible efforts of Special Olympics athletes who train year-round for moments like these.

"You can hear all the excitement for the athletes here today," said Superintendent Bryan O'Hara. "They work hard all year long to participate. We've always worked hand in hand with the Rotary to make this happen—there's a lot of work behind the scenes." The energy was palpable, with cheers echoing from the stands as competitors gave their all in every event.

Participating schools included Ashtabula, Geauga, Columbiana, Kent-Portage, and Trumbull Fairhaven, each sending a team of determined athletes ready to shine. The community rallied around them, with Girard-Liberty Rotary co-president Andy Kish noting, "There's a lot of nice participation from Girard students, as you can see behind us, and plenty of support from the community helping out."

For O'Hara, the event is a powerful reminder of what truly matters. "It keeps everything in perspective—seeing these athletes compete with such spirit, courage, and determination," he said. As the athletes crossed finish lines and celebrated victories, their smiles and teamwork embodied the very essence of sports: fun, resilience, and the joy of striving together.
