Ally McCoist has weighed in on Liverpool's struggles this season, suggesting the Reds have been missing a key figure they let go last summer—and it's not who you might expect.
After Liverpool's Premier League title triumph in 2024/25, a wave of departures swept through Anfield. Among those who moved on was Darwin Nunez, who headed to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal for £46.3 million. The Uruguayan has since netted nine goals in 24 appearances for his new club, but his impact at Liverpool is now being re-evaluated.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist reflected on the Reds' transfer business and what's gone wrong this season. His verdict? Liverpool have missed the much-maligned striker.
"Do you know something? I think they've missed the big boy up front, Darwin Nunez," McCoist said. "He was criticised, and a lot of it was justified, but the one thing he did, he was a presence. He ran about, he made himself a real nuisance, he chipped in with some goals. They've missed him as well I think."
The Scottish legend's comments echo what Wayne Rooney said about Nunez back in February. The former Manchester United striker noted that even though Nunez "wasn't great," he "brought something to the team" that has been hard to replace.
Nunez was a frequent target for criticism during his time in England. Robbie Fowler was among those who lamented his finishing, and by the second half of last season, the forward had lost his starting spot at Liverpool. His final campaign ended with a modest return of just seven goals in 47 appearances.
But what Nunez lacked in clinical finishing, he made up for in heart. His wholehearted effort on the pitch made him a fan favorite, and his knack for popping up with crucial goals in big moments left a lasting impression. As Liverpool navigate a challenging season, McCoist's words serve as a reminder that sometimes, a player's value goes beyond the stat sheet.
