The race for highly-rated Cologne winger Said El Mala is heating up, and according to Bundesliga expert Christian Falk, Chelsea have now surged ahead as the frontrunners for the 19-year-old's signature. Valued at a hefty €50 million (£43.1 million), the teenager has been turning heads with 11 goals and five assists in 33 appearances this season, primarily operating from the left flank.
After a quiet January transfer window, the Blues are expected to be busy this summer, with multiple areas of the squad needing reinforcement. While the club is reportedly still in the market for a centre-back, midfielder, and attacker, co-owner Behdad Eghbali has hinted at a tweak to the club's recruitment model. Though Chelsea are prepared to add more experienced players, their commitment to a youth-oriented policy remains strong, making El Mala a natural target.
Brighton had previously been considered the frontrunners, reportedly willing to meet Cologne's €35 million valuation. However, Falk now reveals that Chelsea have entered the picture, with the player himself showing interest in a move to Stamford Bridge. "There's another club the FC Köln star is interested in, and this is Chelsea," Falk told Bayern Insider. "Cologne demand €50 million. Brighton would have been prepared to pay €35 million, which was not enough for FC Köln."
The financial gap is significant, but Falk suggests the Blues might be the ones to bridge it. "The hope is that's Chelsea. They are interested in the player, but if they'll pay so much for a German talent remains to be seen." For context, El Mala currently earns around €1.5 million at Cologne, while Brighton had offered a substantial raise to €4 million. Now, all eyes are on whether Chelsea will match the asking price for one of Germany's most promising young attackers.
