Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has called on his old club to shake off a troubling habit after they conceded yet another early goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
The Blues fell behind within the first six minutes when Ryan Gravenberch found the net, continuing a worrying trend that has seen Chelsea repeatedly concede early in matches this season. While Enzo Fernandez's equaliser secured a valuable point and ended a run of six straight league defeats, Cahill believes the team must address their slow starts urgently.
"Chelsea are not in great form but you look at how many early goals they've conceded and you think, be switched on; make your first pass, make your first tackle," Cahill told Premier League Productions. "It's a disappointing start for them today and it's something that needs to change."
The draw, while halting their losing streak, did little to improve Chelsea's league position. They remain ninth in the table, having lost further ground on Bournemouth and Brighton. However, there were positives to take from the performance, which was arguably their best since the impressive 4-1 victory over Aston Villa in March.
The return of defender Levi Colwill made a noticeable difference to Chelsea's backline, with the team looking more organised and solid at Anfield than in recent weeks. The Blues also had a strong case for a late penalty when Joao Pedro appeared to be fouled in the box, but the decision went against them.
Despite the frustrations, the improved display should give Chelsea confidence heading into next weekend's FA Cup final. With a trophy still within reach and a new head coach reportedly being lined up, the Blues have an opportunity to finish the season on a high note—if they can just solve their early-game jitters.
