As Chelsea's managerial search heats up this summer, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped an intriguing hint about a name to keep an eye on: former Blues defender Filipe Luis.
The Brazilian left-back, who spent two seasons at Stamford Bridge and won the Premier League title in 2015, is currently without a job after leaving Brazilian giants Flamengo. Interestingly, Flamengo defeated Chelsea in the Club World Cup last summer, adding a touch of drama to this potential link.
Romano revealed on his YouTube channel: "Another name we have to watch on the manager market is the name of Filipe Luis." The 38-year-old is reportedly working toward obtaining his UEFA Pro License, which would allow him to manage in England. He was already linked with the Chelsea job when Enzo Maresca departed in January.
This comes as Chelsea continue their search for a new head coach after sacking Liam Rosenior last month—just four months after appointing him. Rosenior's exit followed Maresca's departure in January, making it a turbulent season at the helm. Currently, Calum McFarlane is in interim charge for the remainder of the campaign.
According to reports, Chelsea's sporting directors have a shortlist of seven or eight candidates, with Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Xabi Alonso among the top names under consideration. However, nothing is advanced with Alonso, while Iraola also has interest from Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
With the managerial market set to be competitive, Filipe Luis's name adds an unexpected twist. His familiarity with the club and growing coaching credentials could make him a dark horse in the race. For now, Chelsea fans have another name to watch as the summer saga unfolds.
