In a major boost for Manchester United's summer transfer plans, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Atletico Madrid are closing in on a deal that could pave the way for the Red Devils to land Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has established himself as one of the most complete midfielders in Serie A, earning high praise from legendary manager Fabio Capello, who described him as an "out of this world" talent. His rare combination of technical ability, stamina, and tactical awareness makes him a dream target for any top club.

Ederson looked destined for Atletico Madrid after the Spanish side agreed personal terms with the player. However, the deal hit a major snag when Atletico couldn't bridge the gap with Atalanta's €45 million (£39 million) asking price, despite their previous successful dealings with the Italian club over players like Lookman, Ruggeri, and Raspadori.

Now, according to Romano, Atletico have shifted their focus to a different Brazilian midfielder—Wolves' Joao Gomes. The transfer insider reports that an "agreement is done" on personal terms between Atletico and the 25-year-old, with the two clubs close to finalizing a deal worth around €40 million.

This development effectively ends Atletico's pursuit of Ederson, leaving Manchester United with a clear path to secure the Serie A star. With his contract running until 2027, Atalanta remain in a strong negotiating position, but the Red Devils now have the advantage of being the only serious suitor in the race for one of Europe's most dynamic midfield talents.
