Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged the club to make a ruthless decision regarding Arne Slot, warning that the head coach faces an uphill battle to win back the trust of the fanbase. The Dutchman's reputation has taken a significant hit during a challenging second season at Anfield, with audible boos ringing out after last weekend's 1-1 draw against Chelsea—a clear signal that patience is wearing thin.

While Xabi Alonso remains a popular name linked with the role, reports suggest FSG are prepared to stand by the 47-year-old and give him time to turn things around next season. However, Murphy believes that waiting could be a costly mistake. "I just don't see a situation, irrelevant of transfer ins and outs—and there are going to be a lot in the summer—where the fans get back to being 100% behind Slot," he told BBC Sport.

Murphy, who knows the weight of the Liverpool shirt from his playing days, explained that Slot would need to replicate his remarkable first-season form—essentially winning every game—while also delivering the attacking, high-intensity football that Anfield demands. "I think Slot's time is probably up," Murphy added. "The main reason is not a dislike of him. I think he's a good guy and a very bright coach, but the reality is Liverpool's fanbase is as powerful as any out there. I don't remember a time when the fans turned on a manager then turned it back around."

For Murphy, the message is clear: act now rather than gamble on a quick turnaround that may never come. In the high-stakes world of top-flight football, sometimes the toughest calls are the ones that matter most.
