The Philadelphia 76ers were recently involved in a blockbuster hypothetical trade scenario.

The Philadelphia 76ers are making headlines once again, but this time it's not about their playoff exit—it's about a blockbuster trade rumor that could shake the very foundation of the franchise. Following a disappointing second-round sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks, the Sixers have already parted ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey after six seasons. Head coach Nick Nurse, however, has been retained despite speculation about his job security. Now, the rumor mill is buzzing with a hypothetical scenario that would see longtime center Joel Embiid swapped for a three-time All-Star forward.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, a "longshot scenario" being discussed by rival team strategists involves sending Embiid to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Domantas Sabonis. "Both former All-Star big men could probably use a fresh start, but there's just no getting around the fact that Embiid, at 32, seems incapable of holding up for a deep playoff run," Fischer wrote. "Which certainly shortens the list of potential suitors."

Sabonis, who signed a massive $186 million contract, has been a standout individual performer for the Kings over the past 4.5 seasons. This year, he averaged 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds, but Sacramento managed just 22 wins—a far cry from playoff contention. Meanwhile, Embiid has led the Sixers to multiple postseason appearances but has never advanced past the second round. His health remains the biggest concern: a litany of lower-body injuries has kept him off the court for extended stretches, and at 32, those issues aren't likely to disappear.

For both players, a change of scenery could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Sabonis, a Gonzaga product, has only tasted the playoffs once with Sacramento, while Embiid's championship window in Philadelphia feels increasingly narrow. But would the Kings gamble on Embiid's injury history? It's a tough sell, which is why Fischer calls it a longshot. Still, in the world of NBA trade chatter, even the most unlikely ideas can spark a conversation—and this one has fans and analysts alike dreaming of a seismic shift in the Eastern Conference landscape.
