Can anyone knock off the top-seeded Bears? Here’s four South Sound teams that we think have a shot. Plus: our championship prediction.

The Tahoma Bears have dominated the South Sound this season, posting a staggering 19-1 record behind one of the region's deepest pitching rotations. Leading the charge is ace Neal Burtis, a 6-foot-1 lefty and Oregon State commit who has been virtually untouchable. Over 35 1/3 innings, Burtis has posted a microscopic 0.40 ERA with 59 strikeouts, making him one of the state's top prospects. But the Bears' pitching prowess doesn't stop there—Talon Coker (0.42 ERA), Brayden Fenton (0.69 ERA), and Sean Evans (2.21 ERA) round out a staff that has made Tahoma the clear team to beat in the 4A District 3/4 tournament.

However, baseball is a game of momentum, and several South Sound contenders are ready to challenge the top-seeded Bears. The tournament kicks off Tuesday, May 12, with the semifinals and championship game set for Saturday, May 16 at Tahoma High School. Here are four teams that could pull off the upset:

Emerald Ridge Spartans — The Spartans have only one puzzling loss (to South Kitsap) and have otherwise fallen to elite competition like Curtis, Olympia, and Emerald Ridge. They feature two-way star Wyatt Plyler, one of the state's top players, and UW commit Jake Miller, who thrives in clutch moments. When Emerald Ridge's bats get hot, they're dangerous to any opponent.

Puyallup Vikings — The Vikings have been one of the 4A SPSL's top programs this spring, anchored by a strong rotation featuring Jackson Dion and Zack Morris. Center fielder Preston Bolam has been on fire at the plate all season. A first-round matchup against Olympia looms large—the teams split their regular-season series, so expect a battle.

Olympia Bears — Speaking of the Bears, Olympia may be peaking at the perfect time. They closed the regular season with a gritty 3-1 win over Emerald Ridge and a 1-0 victory over Sumner in the 4A SPSL championship game, where right-hander Landyn Keister threw a complete-game shutout. That kind of momentum can carry a team deep into the postseason.

Union Vikings — Union faces a tough road, traveling south to take on second-seeded Battle Ground in the opening round. If head coach Bryan Robinson's squad can clear that hurdle, they have the talent to make a run. The Vikings will need to bring their A-game from the first pitch, but they've shown flashes of brilliance all spring.

Championship Prediction: Tahoma's pitching depth is simply too much to overcome. Expect the Bears to ride their dominant staff to the district title and head into the state tournament as a serious threat. But keep an eye on Emerald Ridge—if anyone can spoil the party, it's the Spartans.
