While the San Francisco 49ers' official offseason program hasn't kicked off, star running back Christian McCaffrey is already deep into his unique preparation for the grueling NFL season ahead. Known for his dynamic playmaking, McCaffrey is equally dedicated to innovating his training to stay on the field.
On Tuesday, McCaffrey turned heads by posting a video of an unconventional workout on social media. The clip showed him performing a series of ground-based, crawling movements that left many fans curious. He later joined NFL Network to explain the method behind the movement.
"Those are called 'animal movements,'" McCaffrey revealed to insider Ian Rapoport. "I actually got these from a bunch of UFC fighters way back in the day. It's a cool way to do a lot of strength through full-range-of-motion and flexibility exercises to prep your joints at weird angles you're not used to."
He elaborated on the benefits, highlighting how this approach blends traditional training with functional athleticism. "It's kind of taking the linear strength and conditioning aspect and putting it into more of a global athletic movement—learning how to fall, learning how to roll, using your body at different angles. They get really challenging and really fun."
This focus on durability is crucial for McCaffrey. After a career-high 413 touches last season, his meticulous approach to recovery and joint preparation is a smart strategy for maintaining his elite performance. By borrowing from the demanding world of UFC conditioning, he's building a body ready for the unpredictable rigors of every Sunday.
