Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV made a splash on Friday, May 1, when he stepped onto ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show" to announce his college commitment. The four-star quarterback from Vero Beach, Florida, is taking his talents to South Bend.

Monds officially committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, joining head coach Marcus Freeman's Class of 2027. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound signal-caller chose the Irish over powerhouse programs Ohio State and Florida State.

"I feel like Notre Dame has everything … and this is the best fit for me," Monds said during the announcement.

According to Rivals' industry rankings, Monds is the nation's No. 22 quarterback and the No. 2 quarterback in Florida. He's also ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in the Sunshine State after reclassifying from the Class of 2028 to 2027.

Monds credited Freeman as a major factor in his decision. "He's super down to earth," Monds explained. "When you're talking to him, you don't feel like he's on any other higher level than you. … He's a great guy and a great coach."

On the field, Monds has shown impressive production despite battling injuries. As a freshman, he completed 67.5% of his passes for 2,234 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while also rushing for 502 yards and nine scores. His sophomore season was cut short to just five games due to injury, but he still managed to throw for 691 yards and seven touchdowns without a single interception, completing 71.4% of his passes.

After returning from injury late in his sophomore year, Monds led Vero Beach to the brink of its first state championship in 44 years. In a heartbreaking finish, Lake Mary hit a Hail Mary and extra point as time expired to win 28-27 in the Class 7A title game. In a twist of fate, the quarterback who threw that game-winning pass, Noah Grubbs, also signed with Notre Dame.

For Fighting Irish fans, Monds represents another exciting piece in a recruiting class that continues to build momentum under Freeman's leadership.
