The Dallas Cowboys just wrapped up a stellar draft, and now the focus shifts to rookie minicamp, where we're getting our first real look at the new class in action. From jersey numbers to early impressions, the energy is building fast—and training camp will be here before we know it. But with fresh talent pushing for spots, some veterans are feeling the heat. Here are four Cowboys who could be on the chopping block after this year's draft.
Phil Mafah, Running Back
After a standout career at Clemson, Mafah slipped to the seventh round, where the Cowboys took a chance on him. Last season, he was expected to contribute in a limited role, but injuries derailed his momentum—he spent most of the year on injured reserve and only saw a handful of carries in the season finale. Now, the backfield is crowded. Javonte Williams is locked in as the lead back, while rookie Jaydon Blue is already flashing potential. Malik Davis and versatile option Hunter Leupke, who can handle short-yardage and special teams, are also in the mix. Plus, Israel Abanikanda brings explosive athleticism that could shine with the backups. Mafah will need to outshine not just Abanikanda but also the numbers game at other positions to keep his spot. It's looking likely he'll be cut, with Dallas hoping to stash him on the practice squad.
Jonathan Mingo, Wide Receiver
The Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to acquire Mingo a few years back, but the return on that investment has been minimal. With the addition of George Pickens, Mingo's path to a meaningful role has narrowed significantly. Dallas now has a logjam at wide receiver: CeeDee Lamb, Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy are all but locked in as the top three targets. Mingo will need a huge offseason and training camp to prove he belongs, or he could find himself on the outside looking in.
