The 3A District 3 baseball tournament is heating up, and while Decatur enters as the clear favorite, there are several teams ready to challenge their crown. Here's a look at the contenders and a dark horse that could make some noise.
Decatur has been dominant all season, suffering just two losses—both to powerhouse 4A programs (Kentridge and Tahoma, the latter being the No. 1 seed in the 4A district tournament). The Gators boast a lethal offense, led by Nate Gilmore (.476 average, two home runs, nine doubles) and Ethan Flavel (.442 average, five home runs, three doubles). With that kind of firepower, they're the team to beat.
Gig Harbor, however, might have something to say about that. The Tides should have earned the No. 2 seed after topping Peninsula in the 3A PSL championship game. They're peaking at the right time, with a pitching staff anchored by Quentin Bockhorn, Jake Cuda, and emerging sophomore Max Bergford. If their hitting can stay consistent, they'll be in every game.
Peninsula is another squad that can't be overlooked. The Falcons haven't lost since early April and feature arguably the state's best brother duo: Christopher Moore (.638 average, four home runs, three triples, 10 doubles, 36 RBI; 0.66 ERA, 59 strikeouts in 32 innings) and Lincoln Moore (.377 average, three triples, nine doubles, 19 RBI). That kind of production is tough to stop.
Then there's the Seahawks, who are eager to bounce back from a recent skid (losses to Kelso and Gig Harbor). Peninsula is a well-rounded team with a deep lineup, anchored by junior catcher and leadoff hitter Pete Browand. A Fresno State commit, Browand is hitting a team-high .443 with three home runs, three triples, five doubles, and 25 RBI. He's as tough an out as they come.
Finally, don't sleep on North Thurston (16-5). The Rams are one of the hottest teams in the area, riding a 12-game winning streak after a shaky start. They have the momentum to make a deep run.
The tournament kicks off Tuesday, May 12, with the first round, followed by quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 13. The semifinals and championship game will be held Saturday, May 16 at Auburn High School. Gear up for some thrilling baseball action—and make sure you're ready to show your team pride with the latest apparel!
