What's in a piece of paper? For Chennai Super Kings' Urvil Patel, it was a heartfelt message that made his record-breaking IPL fifty even more special.
In a stunning display of power-hitting against Lucknow Super Giants in Chennai, Patel smashed a 13-ball half-century—equalling the fastest fifty in IPL history. But it was what he pulled from his pocket after reaching the milestone that truly stole the show: a slip of paper reading, "This is for you Papa."
The young batter's innings was pure fireworks. He tore into Avesh Khan in the fifth over, launching three consecutive sixes to collect 25 runs from the over. Avesh's misfiring lengths were ruthlessly punished—one ball disappeared over mid-wicket, another sailed over wide mid-on, and the third cleared the stands at Chepauk, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Patel didn't stop there. In the sixth over against Digvesh Rathi, he smashed more sixes over mid-wicket and long-on, including a mammoth 98-metre hit, as CSK piled on another 25-run over. By the time he was done, he had become the first batter in IPL history to hit six sixes within the first eight balls of an innings, racing to 41 runs off just eight deliveries—smashing the previous record of 33.
The chase was set up after Lucknow Super Giants posted 203 for eight, thanks largely to Josh Inglis's explosive 85 off 33 balls (10 fours, six sixes) that saw LSG score at over 15 runs an over in the powerplay. But Jamie Overton's 3/36 triggered a middle-order collapse, and Shahbaz Ahmed's late 43 off 25 balls helped LSG push past 200.
For Patel, though, this night was about more than stats. It was a tribute to Dad—and a reminder that the best innings are often played with heart.
