Media visionary Ted Turner passed away on Wednesday at age 87, leaving behind a legacy that forever transformed professional wrestling. While Turner is best known for founding CNN and TNT, it was the latter network's role in the "Monday Night Wars" that cemented his place in sports entertainment history.

From 1999 to 2001, TNT served as the home of WCW, going toe-to-toe with the WWF in what fans still consider pro wrestling's golden era. At the center of this revolution was Eric Bischoff, the former WCW head who credits Turner with changing his life forever.

"He changed my life, he changed the lives of my children. None of us would be where we are today," Bischoff reflected on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "I would not be involved with what I'm doing now were it not for the opportunities Ted Turner provided to me. And I'm just one guy. Think about all of the people that worked at Turner Broadcasting — the thousands of people who got opportunities and got to pursue their careers because of the entrepreneurial, groundbreaking vision that Ted Turner had when it came to the media landscape."

Bischoff went even further in his praise, calling Turner "the media version of Elon Musk in his time." That bold comparison speaks volumes about the scale of Turner's impact on an industry that continues to thrive today.

For those who lived through the Monday Night Wars, the rivalry between WCW and WWF represented pro wrestling at its absolute peak. Both companies brought their A-game each week, with each episode feeling like a championship bout. Bischoff believes none of that magic would have been possible without Turner's willingness to challenge the industry's reigning giant.

"What we really changed with 'Nitro' was the format," Bischoff explained. "People look at the bells and whistles, oh, we gave away finishes and this and that. All of that is true. But when Ted said to me, 'Eric, go compete,' I had no idea how to do it."

In a sport defined by larger-than-life characters and unforgettable moments, Turner's greatest contribution may have been giving the wrestling world permission to dream bigger. His legacy lives on not just in the history books, but in every high-flying move, every dramatic promo, and every fan who still gets chills remembering the Monday night battles that defined an era.
