'Same red flags' - Is Rohl the new Clement?

Danny Rohl may have "half a chance" of surviving as Rangers boss with a decent summer window, but are there worrying similarities with ex-head coach Philippe Clement? Scott Cameron of the Rangers Journal podcast certainly thinks so and has concerns over the team's style and identity under Rohl. Clement, now head coach of Norwich, was appointed at Ibrox in October 2023 and won the League Cup two months later but missed out on the league title by eight points after a string of poor performances during the run-in.

Danny Rohl has "half a chance" of keeping his job as Rangers boss—but only if the club delivers a strong summer transfer window. However, for many supporters, the warning signs are starting to look all too familiar.

Scott Cameron of the Rangers Journal podcast is among those drawing worrying comparisons between Rohl and former head coach Philippe Clement. Clement, now at Norwich, arrived at Ibrox in October 2023 and lifted the League Cup within two months. Yet despite that early success, his team crumbled down the stretch, finishing eight points behind Celtic in the league title race. By February 2025, he was gone—sacked after a shocking Scottish Cup exit to Queen's Park and a 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren.

Fast forward to now, and history appears to be repeating itself. Sunday's defeat at Celtic Park mathematically ended Rangers' title hopes, and Cameron isn't convinced Rohl is the man to turn things around.

"I've been here before—and we've been here before as Rangers supporters," Cameron told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "I feel very similar to how I did under Clement two years ago. The same red flags and the same concerns about the approach."

Cameron acknowledges Rohl is a "nice guy," but that alone won't cut it at a club built on winning trophies. "I just want a competent Rangers manager that gets us lifting trophies," he said. "He has to basically rip this squad apart. He talks about identity and leaders and every buzzword under the sun, but Rangers need a strong spine with players that are brave in possession."

The core issue, according to Cameron, is recruitment. "It all comes down to recruitment. That's the issue for me. If we can recruit, he's got half a chance. Although I do have concerns over what his actual style and identity is."

He posed a pointed question: "If Rohl had been appointed as an interim manager in October or November, would we be pushing for him to be given the job permanently?" For Cameron, the answer is clear. "My gut instinct is generally right, and I think you cut the cord and bring somebody else in with a pre-season and the opportunity."

It's a sentiment that resonates deeply with a fanbase weary of instability. "I always refer to my wee boy. He has probably seen more Rangers managers in the near nine years of his life than I had seen in the previous 40," Cameron added. "It's remarkable, and I don't like this rinse-and-repeat cycle we're in. But until you get the right people in place, nothing changes."
