'Mujhe laga achha score hai': Axar Patel says set batters made difference after DC loss to CSK

On whether 155 was a competitive total, Axar said, "Yes obviously. The wicket the way played in the first innings, we felt that 155 was a really good score on the board. But I felt that we played with 8 batters, so we were 10-15 runs short."

In a gripping IPL 2026 clash at Delhi, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) handed Delhi Capitals (DC) a convincing eight-wicket defeat, with Sanju Samson stealing the show with a masterful unbeaten 87 off just 52 balls. Chasing a target of 156, Samson's innings—featuring seven boundaries and six towering sixes—guided CSK home in only 17.3 overs, giving their net run-rate a healthy boost.

Earlier, DC chose to bat first on a tricky surface that offered early assistance to bowlers. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein set the tone for CSK with a disciplined spell, finishing with 1 for 19 and bowling 14 dot balls, stifling DC's scoring. At one stage, Delhi found themselves reeling at 69 for five in the 11th over. However, a crucial 65-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Tristan Stubbs (38 off 31) and Sameer Rizvi (40 not out off 24) helped them scramble to 155 for seven.

After the match, DC captain Axar Patel reflected on the missed opportunity. "We have enough firepower in the team, and that was the only positive from this game," Axar said. "But in terms of our bowling unit, I feel that I missed my partner Kuldeep (Yadav) tonight," he added, pointing to Kuldeep's expensive spell of 0 for 34 in three overs.

When asked if 155 was a competitive total, Axar was candid: "Yes, obviously. The way the wicket played in the first innings, we felt that 155 was a really good score on the board. But I felt that we played with eight batters, so we were 10-15 runs short." He also noted how the pitch eased out in the second innings. "The wicket got better in the second innings. I felt that the set batters made the difference, to be honest. When a set batter bats in the middle, they make sure that the wicket looks flat. I still felt that the wicket had something for the bowlers."

Axar further explained the challenges for new batsmen: "It wasn't easy to bat for the new batters. The ball was holding up on the surface. It was difficult for them, but once you are set, you can take the game away from the opposition. A clear example is in front of you—Sanju Samson."

For cricket fans and players alike, this match served as a reminder of how crucial adaptability and partnerships are in T20 cricket—whether you're chasing a target or setting one.
