Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver has a simple message for his players ahead of Saturday's crucial clash with Barnet: embrace the nerves. As the Sulphurites fight to complete a remarkable relegation escape, Weaver believes that tension can be a powerful ally rather than a burden.
Back-to-back wins against Colchester and Walsall have given Harrogate the momentum they need in their battle to extend their five-year stay in the English Football League. But with the final day of the League Two season looming, the team remains in the drop zone—separated only by goal difference as they prepare to host Barnet at the Exercise Stadium.
"There'll be some nervous energy from the stands this weekend, which is completely understandable," Weaver told BBC Radio York. "But hopefully we can all use it as fuel to go on and succeed one more time. The players understand that it's OK to be nervous. It's actually a good thing. It shows that you care, and it can keep you focused."
Weaver's philosophy is refreshingly honest: perfection isn't the goal. "Don't expect a perfect performance because of it. But that's OK. It's OK to be imperfect but brilliant with the attitude, and use it as a driver to succeed."
The relegation battle is a tight one. With Barrow all but mathematically down, the fight to stay in the EFL involves Crawley (facing promotion-chasing Salford), Newport (up against Barrow), and Tranmere (taking on Grimsby). With all matches kicking off simultaneously, fans will be anxiously checking scores from around the country.
As for Weaver, he plans to stay focused on the pitch. "I don't think it would be a good look for me checking my phone and scrolling all the time. I'll get a little nudge every now and again from Rachel the physio, who will keep me in tune with the scores. But it's the end result that counts. If we control what we can control and get a win, then it puts a lot of pressure on elsewhere."
For fans heading to the stadium, expect a tense afternoon—but one that could end in celebration. And if you're looking to show your support in style, make sure you're kitted out in your best Harrogate gear. After all, every great escape needs a great outfit.
