Newcastle defender Dan Burn says he has "built a lot of resilience" in his rise from non-league to the Champions League. Burn had to work his way up to the top level, spending time at Blyth Spartans, Darlington, Yeovil Town, Birmingham City, Wigan and playing in the National League, League Two, League One, and the Championship before making his Premier League debut. "I'm very proud of the journey I've taken," he told BBC Look North's Nisha Joshi at the launch of the 'One of Our Own' initiative by the club and Newcastle City Council to mark Mental Health Awareness Week this week.

Dan Burn's path to the Champions League wasn't paved with red carpets—it was built on grit, non-league pitches, and an unshakable belief in himself. The Newcastle defender recently opened up about his remarkable journey from grassroots football to Europe's biggest stage, and his story is one every underdog will love.

"I wouldn't have had it any other way," Burn said with pride. His rise reads like a football odyssey: Blyth Spartans, Darlington, Yeovil Town, Birmingham City, Wigan—each stop a stepping stone through the National League, League Two, League One, and the Championship before he finally made his Premier League debut. "It's built a lot of resilience in me to show I can go through those levels."

Speaking at the launch of the 'One of Our Own' initiative—a partnership between Newcastle United and the city council for Mental Health Awareness Week—Burn reflected on how his mindset evolved. "The first half of my career was built on fear of not making it or letting people down," he admitted. "But especially since having kids, I've settled a lot more. I'm happy and confident in myself as a footballer and a person."

Now a towering presence in Newcastle's defense, Burn doesn't dwell too much on his journey—at least not yet. "I try not to think about it because you can get ahead of yourself. But once I've finished playing, I'm sure it's something I'll reflect on."

When asked if his incredible story could one day fill a book, Burn laughed: "You never know... If there's someone out there who wants to write it, absolutely!"

For fans who love a true football story—and the gear to match—Burn's journey reminds us that every great player starts somewhere. Whether you're chasing Champions League glory or just your next personal best, resilience is the only kit you never take off.
