What started as a joke has turned into a full-time career for one of the UK's most promising professional wrestlers. Johnny Jupiter—better known to fans as The Gladiator—is living proof that sometimes the best opportunities come when you least expect them.
Just a few years ago, Jupiter was a multi-sport athlete with a background in jiu-jitsu, football, rugby, boxing, shot put, discus, and power lifting. But as he hit his 30s, his interest in those sports began to fade. That's when someone in the wrestling industry noticed his impressive physique and suggested he "give it a go."
"I thought I'd try it for a bit of a laugh," Jupiter recalls. "It got really out of hand, and a few years later, here I am living on the road as a professional wrestler."
Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in and weighing 266lbs, Jupiter realized he was even bigger than WWE legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin. With a jiu-jitsu foundation and a larger-than-life presence, he quickly found his footing in the squared circle. Now he's part of All Star Wrestling—one of the UK's top promotions—and preparing for the highly anticipated Superslam Showdown event at Stoke-on-Trent's historic Victoria Hall this Saturday.
"I love it—it's the best job in the world," Jupiter told BBC Radio Stoke. "There is a lot of sacrifice. It's physically demanding, and there's also a lot of time on the road—in airports, service stations, and in the car. It's a labour of love, very much so. I wouldn't still be here if I didn't love it."
For Jupiter, whose childhood hero was Hulk Hogan, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. He describes it as a "massive honour" to be part of All Star Wrestling, a promotion founded in 1970 by the late, legendary promoter Brian Dixon.
With family roots in Staffordshire, the upcoming show at the "legendary" Victoria Hall feels like a full-circle homecoming moment—even though he's never performed there before. "It's going to be special," he says. "This is where it all comes together."
Whether you're a longtime wrestling fan or just discovering the sport, Jupiter's story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the best moves in life are the ones you never planned. And for this Gladiator, the journey is just getting started.
