When you've been dreaming about the NFL your whole life, finally putting on that helmet with an NFL logo is a moment you never forget. For Washington Commanders rookie running back Kaytron Allen, that moment has finally arrived—and he's soaking it all in.
Known by the unforgettable nickname "Fatman," Allen was selected by the Commanders in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. While the draft's early rounds saw Arizona snag Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love at No. 3 overall—a player many analysts had linked to Washington—the Commanders pivoted to address their defensive needs first, landing Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles at No. 7.
But when Penn State's all-time leading rusher was still available late in the draft, General Manager Adam Peters couldn't resist. Allen, who rushed for over 4,000 yards with the Nittany Lions, brings a powerful, proven presence to a backfield that already includes Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jeremy McNichols, and Jerome Ford.
At the Commanders' rookie minicamp over the weekend, Allen took his first NFL practice reps and reflected on the surreal journey. "I was talking to one of my teammates, and I'm like, it's crazy how we just got here, man, and you've been dreaming about this so long," Allen told reporters after Friday's practice. "You get to put on the cleats and actually put on an NFL logo. It's just a blessing to be here, and I'm grateful for it all."
Signing his first NFL contract was, in his words, a "dream come true." But Allen knows the real work is just beginning. With five running backs currently on the roster—and most teams carrying just three or four—competition for a spot will be fierce. Without a clear No. 1 back on the depth chart, Washington appears likely to keep four, meaning Allen will have to battle it out with the likes of Jerome Ford for a role in the offense.
For now, though, "Fatman" is simply enjoying the ride—and making a strong first impression.
