When Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stepped onto the field for his final innings in the 2025 IPL season, few could have predicted the journey that lay ahead. A quiet conversation with Rahul Dravid after that match would set the tone for everything that followed. "Next year will be crucial," Dravid told the young prodigy. "It will be a real test for you because opposition bowlers would have figured you out."
At that point, Sooryavanshi had already made history as the youngest player to score an IPL century. But rather than resting on his laurels, he chose to double down. The result? In the ongoing 2026 season, he has already amassed over 400 runs, including a century and two half-centuries. The bowlers, it seems, are still searching for answers.
What makes this story even more remarkable is the dedication behind the scenes. Sooryavanshi made the bold decision to skip his Class 10 board exams to attend the Rajasthan Royals' training camp. Even after scoring centuries in England, Australia, and South Africa, and a match-winning 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final, he continued to put in extra hours refining his game.
Zubin Bharucha, Sooryavanshi's mentor and former Rajasthan Royals director of cricket, recently revealed the franchise's secret to keeping their star from becoming a one-season wonder. "Everybody predicted that he would not have a good second season in the IPL," Bharucha told Wisden. "And that was a very big motivating factor in terms of how we can get him ready."
The preparation was meticulous. From the moment they first spotted him, the Royals tracked everything—bat speed, swing speed, and impact points. "He is intuitive and extremely intelligent," Bharucha added. "He would remember every tiny detail of every ball bowled to him. Very specific, very well planned, always ready for what might happen."
In a league where young talent often fades after a breakout season, Sooryavanshi is proving that with the right support system and an unrelenting work ethic, the sophomore slump is just another challenge to conquer.
