BLOOMINGTON — The road back to the field is rarely a straight line, especially after a major injury. For Indiana quarterback Tyler Cherry, that path involved a significant knee injury that sidelined him for all of 2025 and even led to his temporary removal from the roster. But this spring, the former Center Grove star and state champion is back, turning heads and proving his doubters wrong.

Head coach Curt Cignetti acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Cherry's return, admitting Thursday, "There were some people that didn’t think he’d come back from that knee, and he did." Cignetti praised Cherry's unwavering dedication, highlighting the quarterback's mental fortitude and commitment to his comeback. "He had his mind made up, and he was committed to playing football," Cignetti said.

Cherry's journey to Bloomington has been eventful. A highly-touted four-star prospect, he initially committed to Duke before flipping to Indiana following a coaching change. He enrolled early and served as the third-string quarterback in 2024, preserving his redshirt in a limited role. His trajectory was abruptly halted during a non-contact drill in December 2024, leading to a lengthy recovery that saw him contribute as a student assistant during Indiana's national championship run last fall.

Now fully cleared, Cherry is showcasing more than just a healed knee. He has added significant size to his 6-foot-5 frame, bulking up to roughly 220 pounds after arriving on campus under 200. More importantly, he brings a deep understanding of Indiana's offensive system, a knowledge base that surpasses his teammates in the quarterback room. This combination of physical development and mental mastery has made a strong impression during spring practice.

Behind seniors Josh Hoover and Grant Wilson, Cherry is seizing his opportunity. His progress was notable enough that Cignetti felt comfortable sitting the presumptive starter, Hoover, during Thursday's session, a testament to the depth Cherry is helping to build. For a player whose future was once in question, Tyler Cherry is now firmly in the picture, demonstrating the resilience and dedication that defines a true competitor.
