Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher may have been team-mates for England - but there is clearly no love lost between the former centre-backs based on a social media spat.

When two Premier League legends trade barbs on social media, the football world takes notice. Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher may have shared an England dressing room, but their latest online exchange proves old rivalries never truly fade.

The sparks flew ahead of Sunday's Manchester United vs. Liverpool clash. Ferdinand, never one to shy away from a bit of banter, posted a throwback photo on Twitter with a simple challenge: "Caption this." The image captured a moment from September 2004—Ferdinand celebrating with his Manchester United teammates after Mikaël Silvestre's winner, with a visibly dejected Carragher in the background.

For context, that match marked Ferdinand's return from an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test, making the victory especially sweet for the United faithful. But Carragher wasn't about to let his old adversary have the last word.

"Not like you to make sure you were in the picture of someone else's goal," Carragher fired back. "You now carry on this ritual by hanging around mixed zones bothering star players & asking your lackeys to film it!" The dig targeted Ferdinand's YouTube channel, "Rio Ferdinand Presents," where the former defender often interviews current stars.

Ferdinand didn't let the remark slide. On his podcast, he responded with a mix of amusement and disbelief. "I thought it was really, really harsh," he said. "I just put a picture of us celebrating a goal. I've scored a couple of goals in these games against Liverpool, but I didn't put one I scored in." (For the record, Ferdinand netted twice against Liverpool, both in 2006 at Old Trafford.)

"I put one I was celebrating," Ferdinand continued. "I love celebrating, and he tried to really hammer me. I don't understand why. I don't know what it is that's rubbed him up the wrong way. He spat his dummy out. He was spitting feathers."

The choice of words raised eyebrows. Some fans were quick to note the irony—Carragher made headlines in 2018 after being caught on camera spitting from his car toward a girl following Liverpool's 2-1 loss to United, an incident that led to his suspension by Sky Sports. Whether intentional or not, Ferdinand's phrasing added another layer to this simmering feud.

"He used to be a team-mate of mine with England," Ferdinand added with a smirk. "He used to carry my wash bag."

For fans of both clubs, this spat is a reminder that some rivalries transcend the pitch. Whether you're Team Carragher or Team Ferdinand, one thing's for sure: the passion for the game—and a good old-fashioned social media scrap—is alive and well.
