Sometimes, the best stories in football are written in the most unexpected moments—and Hull City's Mohamed Belloumi just penned a classic.

When the Algerian winger was called upon just before halftime in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg at Millwall, manager Sergej Jakirovic wasn't exactly thrilled. Belloumi, replacing the injured Kyle Joseph, kept his furious boss and teammates waiting while he calmly tied his boot laces. It wasn't the ideal start to a high-stakes match.

Fast forward 50 minutes, and all was forgiven. One goal, one assist, and a starring role later, Belloumi had turned frustration into celebration.

"Mo's brilliant. He can be whatever he wants to be," striker Oli McBurnie told Sky Sports. "He was probably unlucky not to start, but the gaffer obviously knew what he was doing because they both [along with Joe Gelhardt] came on and scored."

At 23, Belloumi announced himself as Hull's hero. His curling strike ended a two-and-a-half-hour goal drought in the semi-final, breaking Millwall's resistance. Then, showing incredible work rate, he won the ball back in his own half, drove forward, and set up Gelhardt for the second. Two substitutes, one dream result.

The win books Hull a spot in the Championship play-off final on May 23, where they'll face either Southampton or Middlesbrough for a place in the Premier League.

But Belloumi's journey to this moment has been anything but smooth. Since joining Hull from Portuguese side Farense in August 2024, he's faced more setbacks than most. A promising start was cut short by an anterior cruciate ligament injury in November 2024. By the time he returned last August, the club had gone through two managers before settling on Jakirovic.

Recovering from such a serious injury takes time, and two hamstring issues have kept him out for four months this season. He started the goalless first leg and hit the post early, but Jakirovic admitted Belloumi hadn't trained since due to fatigue in both hamstrings and his Achilles.

Yet when it mattered most, Belloumi delivered. From boot laces to brilliance, he turned a manager's displeasure into pure delight.
