As Royal Challengers Bengaluru gear up for their crucial IPL 2026 showdown against Kolkata Knight Riders, all eyes are on a potential game-changer: the fitness of KKR's star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has weighed in, suggesting that if Chakaravarthy sits out, it could be a massive boost for RCB—especially given Virat Kohli's track record against faster spinners.
RCB enter the contest riding high after a thrilling two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, while KKR have clawed their way back into playoff contention with four straight victories. That resurgence has been fueled largely by Chakaravarthy's return to form. The mystery spinner has snared eight wickets in his last four matches, becoming the linchpin of Kolkata's bowling attack once again. But his availability remains in doubt after he picked up an injury while attempting to stop a shot from Ishan Kishan during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was later seen limping during his spell against Delhi Capitals. According to ESPNCricinfo, KKR assistant coach Shane Watson confirmed that Varun was "sore and being monitored." While the spinner did bowl briefly in training, he wasn't at full intensity and spent much of the session stretching and chatting with teammates.
"If Varun Chakaravarthy is not available, then it is a big plus for RCB," Kaif said on JioStar's 'Match Centre Live'. "He has come back into form recently, was bowling really well and hitting the right areas. Virat Kohli is someone who enjoys playing against faster spin bowlers."
Kaif also emphasized that KKR would ideally want Varun fit to maintain their preferred bowling combination of "two pacers, one all-rounder, and three spinners." He praised Anukul Roy for his impact in the powerplay, noting that Roy's role has allowed Sunil Narine to be deployed more strategically in the middle overs. For RCB, Chakaravarthy's absence could tilt the balance in their favor—and give Kohli the freedom to take on a less threatening spin attack.
