The race to sign one of Europe's most promising young defenders is heating up, and Liverpool might just have the edge over Premier League rivals Chelsea. At just 22 years old, Ecuador international Joel Ordonez has quickly become a household name in Belgian football, and his next move could be to Anfield.

Reports from January suggested Liverpool were closing in on a deal for the Club Brugge centre-back, and while a transfer didn't materialize during the winter window, the interest hasn't cooled. Ordonez has been a standout performer in the Jupiler Pro League and on the Champions League stage, showcasing the composure and physicality that have made him one of the most sought-after young defenders in the game.

Over the weekend, Chelsea scouts were spotted watching Ordonez in action as Brugge secured a crucial win against Anderlecht in the Belgian title race. But Liverpool remain firmly in the hunt, with TEAMtalk reporting that the Reds are among a host of Premier League clubs tracking the 1.88m right-footer. "Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Aston Villa have all been closely monitoring Ordonez in recent months," the report states, adding that Club Brugge's asking price is expected to be around £35 million.

For Liverpool, bolstering the defense is a priority heading into the new season. While young talents like Giovanni Leoni (returning from injury), Mor Talla Ndiaye, and Jeremy Jacquet offer depth, the potential departures of key players loom large. Ibrahima Konate could leave on a free transfer if a new contract isn't agreed, while stalwarts Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are set to see their deals expire a year later. Sporting director Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot are carefully assessing their options, and Ordonez has emerged as a prime target.

Ordonez, who rose through the ranks at Ecuador's Independiente del Valle before moving to Brugge in 2022, is under contract until 2028 after recently signing an extension. His versatility—able to play both centre-back and right-back—makes him an attractive addition for any top club. As the summer window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Liverpool can fend off the competition and secure this rising star for their backline.
