Class 2A No. 11 Gilbert was in control from start to finish during a 5-0 win over rival Nevada in high school girls soccer.

GILBERT — When you step onto the pitch against a rival, every game carries extra weight. For the Class 2A No. 11 Gilbert girls soccer team, their April 30 matchup against Nevada was more than just another contest—it was a chance to settle a score. And settle it they did, delivering a dominant 5-0 victory that sent a clear message across the field.

From the opening whistle, the Tigers controlled the tempo, keeping the ball firmly planted on Nevada's half of the field for nearly the entire game. It was a performance that erased the sting of last year's 1A regional finals, where the Cubs handed Gilbert a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. "It's definitely good that we came back off of a loss to them last year at (regionals)," said Gilbert midfielder Greta Platts. "It's definitely a chip off our shoulder to get that win today."

With the win, Gilbert improved to an impressive 6-0-2 on the season, while Nevada dropped to 4-4-1. Here are three key takeaways from the Tigers' statement victory.

1. Midfield dominance was the difference
Gilbert's midfield was the engine that powered this win. Lila Kruckenberg and Izzy Terrones were everywhere, covering ground, breaking up Nevada's through balls, and setting up their forwards with precision passes. Ray Mueller, Allie Grandgenett, and Greta Platts kept constant pressure on the Cubs' defensive back line and goalkeeper Hailey Gruhn, never giving them a moment to breathe. Sammy Johnson and Kennady Hansen added even more firepower in the middle of the pitch. Johnson, who moved up from her defensive spot, used her blistering speed to chase down loose balls and slice through Nevada's midfield, while also becoming a threat on corner kicks. Hansen showcased her composure on the ball and found the back of the net with a 15-yard strike 25 minutes into the game, putting Gilbert up 2-0.

2. Raya Mueller returned with a bang
Forward Raya Mueller made her presence felt immediately after returning from the International Career Development Conference in Georgia. She led Gilbert's offensive charge with two goals, starting with the game's first score just 14 minutes in, thanks to a beautiful setup from forward Madisen Powers. Mueller added her second goal on an open net just 6½ minutes into the second half, effectively putting the game out of reach. Her ability to find space and finish with precision was a reminder of just how dangerous this Gilbert attack can be.

3. Depth and versatility shine
What made this win even more impressive was the way Gilbert's entire roster contributed. Platts capped off the scoring with an outstanding shot 10 minutes before the final whistle, and the Tigers' defensive unit—anchored by goalkeeper Annika Yoder-Stoulil—kept Nevada off the board entirely. The team's ability to rotate players seamlessly and maintain pressure from all angles shows a squad that's built for a deep postseason run. For a team that's now unbeaten in eight games, the chemistry and confidence are clearly growing with every match.
