Liverpool's right-back situation has been nothing short of a rollercoaster this season, leaving fans and pundits alike scratching their heads. After Trent Alexander-Arnold's cut-price move to Real Madrid last summer, the Reds were left scrambling for solutions. Conor Bradley was handed a new contract and a golden opportunity to step up, while Jeremie Frimpong arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5 million to add depth and competition.
But things haven't gone to plan. Bradley has been sidelined since January with injury, and Frimpong has also struggled with fitness issues in his debut season at Anfield. The situation has become so dire that midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Curtis Jones have all been deployed at right-back, while Joe Gomez has seen more minutes than anticipated. For a Premier League champion side, it's far from ideal.
Now, with the summer transfer window looming, it seems Liverpool are ready to address this lingering weak spot. Enter Denzel Dumfries—a seasoned right-back and wing-back who recently helped Inter Milan secure the Serie A title. The 30-year-old Dutch international is under contract with the Nerazzurri until 2028, but here's the kicker: he's available to foreign clubs for just €25 million in July 2026. That's a tempting price tag for sporting director Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot.
And the rumors are heating up. According to respected Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen, Dumfries will be wearing Liverpool red next season. Speaking on De Telegraaf's Kick-off podcast, Driessen stated, "Liverpool. I have heard those rumors before, and I said so then as well. There will be no follow-up on this now, but I think it will become clear after the season."
Interestingly, Frimpong has looked out of his element at right-back, often being pushed to the right wing in recent months. But the Dutch connection could be key here. Ronald Koeman has already fielded both Frimpong and Dumfries together for the Netherlands national team, and Driessen sees that as a blueprint for Liverpool. "In the Dutch national team, you also have Frimpong and Dumfries," he added. "So then you always have a good replacement."
If this deal goes through, Liverpool could finally have the stability and depth they've been craving on the right flank. For a club that prides itself on squad strength, adding a Serie A title-winner for a bargain fee might just be the perfect play.
