Michael Jordan‘s entry into NASCAR has been celebrated and mostly welcomed by everyone. However, a section of the community has remained doubtful about his relevance to the sport.

When Michael Jordan first stepped into the NASCAR world as co-owner of 23XI Racing alongside Denny Hamlin, the excitement was undeniable. But for every fan who welcomed the NBA legend with open arms, there was another who quietly questioned: what does a basketball icon really know about stock car racing?

It's a fair question. Jordan built his legacy on hardwood floors, not asphalt ovals. And with Hamlin—a proven NASCAR veteran—calling the shots on the racing side, it's easy to assume Jordan is just a figurehead, a celebrity investor along for the ride.

But according to Nick Payne, 23XI Racing's spotter, that assumption couldn't be further from the truth. In a recent appearance on the Rubbin' is Racing podcast, Payne set the record straight on what he calls "the biggest misconception" surrounding Jordan's role.

"It's intimidating; I mean, I wouldn't lie and say it doesn't have that factor, but it's rewarding in the sense of—he's fully involved," Payne explained. "People think he is probably not involved as he is, but he is."

Payne went on to describe a team owner who is anything but detached. Jordan sits in on strategy meetings, attends pre-race briefings when he's at the track, and delivers speeches that show a deep understanding of the sport. He knows every team member by name, asks thoughtful questions, and has fully immersed himself in learning the intricacies of racing.

"He's fully become a student of the racing world," Payne added. "I think that part is really exciting to see."

Jordan's commitment was on full display during the 2026 season, when he attended races most weekends. He regularly references his drivers' performances in interviews and can break down key moments with impressive accuracy—like after Tyler Reddick's win at Kansas, when Jordan recalled the late-race scare his driver faced and why it mattered.

For fans who love seeing their favorite athletes thrive in new arenas, Jordan's NASCAR journey is a reminder that greatness isn't confined to one sport. And for 23XI Racing, having an owner who shows up, asks questions, and genuinely cares about every detail is a game-changer—both on and off the track.
