At just 22 years old, Xavier Dillard has pulled off something truly extraordinary—literally. The Virginia native claims to have completed a staggering 12,412 pull-ups in just 24 hours, potentially breaking the world record and proving that persistence pays off.
Dillard's journey to this incredible feat began three years ago in a friend's basement. After losing a pull-up challenge to his buddy, the competitive fire was lit. "I'm better than him in every other exercise except pull-ups. Like, I hate pull-ups," Dillard told local ABC affiliate WHSV. "I couldn't stand it. I'm very competitive. So after we tried, I spent every day training pull-ups."
That daily dedication turned into a two-year training regimen. Starting with modest sets of 12, Dillard gradually built up his endurance until he was knocking out 2,400 pull-ups in a single training week—equivalent to four hours of pulling every day. His ambitious target for the record attempt was 14,000 pull-ups, though he fell just short of that mark.
The record-breaking attempt took place between 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, at a CrossFit gym in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Dillard live-streamed the entire 24-hour ordeal on YouTube, allowing viewers to witness every single rep of his 12,412 pull-ups.
If confirmed, Dillard's total would surpass the current official record held by Mexico's Enrique Zapata, who completed 12,345 pull-ups in January—just 67 fewer than Dillard's count. However, Guinness World Records will need to review the footage before officially recognizing the achievement.
Dillard admitted the mental and physical toll was immense. "The most difficult part was persisting through the pain and not giving up," he recalled, describing moments of blurry vision and tears during the grueling challenge. For anyone who's ever struggled through a tough workout, that kind of grit is nothing short of inspiring—and a reminder that even the toughest goals are achievable with the right mindset.
