The New England Patriots may be months away from the 2027 NFL Draft, but early predictions are already heating up—and one mock draft has them making a surprising move in the first round.

According to Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski, the Patriots are projected to select LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green with the No. 26 overall pick. It’s an unexpected choice for a team that already has a solid tight end room, but Green’s unique skill set makes him a tantalizing prospect.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 237 pounds, Green is a matchup nightmare. Sobleski describes him as “an elite pass-catcher at the position,” highlighting his ability to dominate in the red zone with his size and contested-catch skills. A dual-sport athlete who also played basketball for LSU, Green brings a rare blend of athleticism and physicality that could make him a favorite target for years to come.

In 2025, Green recorded 433 receiving yards under then-head coach Brian Kelly. He’ll now play for new LSU coach Lane Kiffin in 2026, which could further elevate his game and draft stock.

The Patriots currently have Hunter Henry as their starting tight end. Henry was a reliable target in 2025, finishing second on the team with 768 receiving yards. New England also added Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon with the No. 95 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, suggesting they’re already thinking about the future at the position.

But with Henry’s contract set to expire after the 2026 season, the Patriots could be looking for a long-term replacement. If Henry tests free agency, Green would be a natural fit—a young, dynamic tight end who can stretch the field and create mismatches in the passing game.

For Patriots fans, this mock draft pick signals a shift in thinking. Instead of reaching for a quarterback or wide receiver early, the team might be prioritizing a versatile weapon who can anchor the offense for years. Whether or not this prediction comes true, it’s clear that New England is already planning for life after Henry.
