Big news out of the Land of 10,000 Lakes! The Minnesota Golden Gophers have landed a major piece for their 2027 recruiting class, securing a commitment from talented linebacker Kason Clayborne.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound standout from Sioux City (Iowa) East made his decision official Tuesday evening, choosing the Gophers over a strong list of suitors that included Purdue, Michigan State, and Arizona. It's a significant win for head coach P.J. Fleck and his staff, who have been working hard to build momentum for the future.
Clayborne brings serious credentials to the table. Ranked as the No. 822 overall prospect and No. 74 linebacker in the 2027 cycle by the Rivals Industry Ranking, he's also considered the No. 9 recruit in the state of Iowa. His game film backs up those numbers, too. Last season, he was a force on defense for Sioux City East, tallying 51 tackles—including 10.5 for loss—along with a sack and a pick-six. But he's not just a one-way player; Clayborne also showcased his versatility on offense, hauling in 27 receptions for 302 yards and six touchdowns.
This commitment didn't happen overnight. Clayborne returned to Minnesota's campus this spring and felt the connection with Coach Fleck and the program. He's already scheduled an official visit for the end of May, which he'll now make as a fully committed member of the Gophers' 2027 class. Rivals' Allen Trieu noted back in March that linebackers coach Mariano Sori-Marin and defensive coordinator Danny Collins were leading the charge in his recruitment, and their efforts clearly paid off.
Clayborne's addition gives Minnesota a formidable one-two punch at linebacker for the future. He'll join forces with Iowa City Regina four-star Tate Wallace, a top-400 prospect and the No. 27 linebacker in the nation, who committed just this past weekend. Together, they form the foundation of a defense that looks poised to be a problem for Big Ten offenses.
With 14 commits now in the fold, Minnesota's 2027 class ranks No. 27 nationally according to the Rivals industry Team Recruiting Rankings. For Gophers fans, the future is looking bright—and it's being built with tough, versatile players like Clayborne who can make plays all over the field.
