It's that time of year again—the IHSAA baseball state tournament is just around the corner, and the sectional pairings were announced on Sunday, May 3. With the first pitch of the postseason set for Wednesday, May 27, excitement is building across the South Bend area. Six local teams are ready to defend their sectional crowns from last season: Goshen, Jimtown, New Prairie, NorthWood, Penn, and Triton. Even more impressive, Goshen and NorthWood went on to claim regional titles as well.

While many of these reigning champions are favorites to repeat, the first month of the season has shown that some challengers are hungry for the spotlight. In Class 4A, the defending sectional champion Penn Kingsmen (16-3) are ranked No. 3 in the state and enter as heavy favorites. They'll face a field that includes host Mishawaka (9-2), who will be looking to make some noise on their home turf.

Over in Class 4A's other bracket, the Goshen RedHawks (9-4) are out to prove last season's run to the semi-state championship game was no fluke. As hosts of their own sectional, they'll have a home-field advantage, but Concord (8-3) stands in their way. The Minutemen have already handed Goshen a 4-0 loss this season, setting the stage for a potential rematch that could be the highlight of the tournament.

Class 3A brings a marquee first-round matchup that feels like a championship game in disguise. South Bend Saint Joseph (11-4) and New Prairie (12-3) are set to clash early, a testament to the depth of the Northern Indiana Conference. If these NIC rivals had been placed on opposite ends of the bracket at Plymouth, it could have been a dream final. Instead, one will be sent home earlier than expected.

NorthWood (10-4) is also looking to defend its 3A sectional title and make another deep postseason run. The Panthers will need to win three games in the first weekend to advance, and a likely semifinal showdown with a solid Columbia City (9-5) team won't make it easy. But with their experience and talent, they're a team to watch.

In Class 2A, the Jimtown Jimmies (7-4) have a favorable path: they only need to beat Winamac (7-5) to reach the sectional title game, which they'll host on their home diamond. On the other side of the bracket, INSC rivals LaVille (3-11) and Bremen face off in the first round, but the Bremen Lions (9-1) look like the team to beat. If both favorites advance, we could see a thrilling championship showdown between Jimtown and Bremen.

Finally, in Class 1A, defending sectional champion Triton (13-1) is off to a dominant start and will look to continue their winning ways. With only one loss on the season, they're the clear frontrunner to bring home another title.
