The New York Jets continued to build with purpose on Day 2, selecting D'Angelo Ponds and reuniting him with former Indiana Hoosiers teammate Omar Cooper Jr. It’s a move that checks multiple boxes: value, fit, and attitude. It also quietly strengthens a secondary that needed reinforcements.
On paper, the value alone makes this an easy sell. Pro Football Focus ranked Ponds as the sixth-best cornerback in the class and the No. 43 overall prospect. The Jets landing him at No. 50 suggests they may have gotten more than expected without having to reach.
That’s how good drafts are built. Ponds brings a competitive edge that shows up immediately on tape. He’s not afraid to get physical at the line of scrimmage.

In addition to a nice pedigree, he plays bigger than his frame when attacking the football or stepping up in run support. That willingness to mix it up gives him a chance to contribute early, especially in sub-packages where energy and instincts matter.
After being named 2023 Second-Team All-Sun Belt, he earned the first of two consecutive First-Team All-Big Ten mentions. He's a 2025 First-Team All-American and a College Football Playoff National Champion. He also earned Rose Bowl Defensive Player of the Game honors and the Peach Bowl Defensive Most Outstanding Player. From a coverage standpoint, he offers flexibility.
Ponds looks most comfortable in zone, where his awareness and anticipation allow him to read plays and close quickly. However, he’s also shown enough ability in man coverage to hold his own, particularly against quicker receivers working underneath.
