Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane shares draft selection process behind Jalon Kilgore pick

The 2026 NFL Draft is still fresh in the minds of Buffalo Bills fans, and General Manager Brandon Beane is already earning high marks for a savvy selection that could pay major dividends both on the field and in the salary cap column.

When you hit on high-upside rookies, it's a win for the entire organization. Beane knows this better than most, and he may have found a gem in the fifth round with safety Jalon Kilgore out of South Carolina.

Kilgore was originally projected as a Day 2 pick—slotted for the second or third round. Scouts loved his athleticism and saw starter-level potential at the pro level. But when the 21-year-old surprisingly slid down the board, Buffalo didn't hesitate to stop the fall at pick No. 167.

When the call came in from One Bills Drive, Kilgore made his intentions clear. "You just made the best pick in the draft," he told the front office. "I promise you, coach. I promise you."

Beane echoed that confidence, detailing the team's extensive scouting process. "Jalon was another guy we really liked, and we had a pretty good value," he said. "We sent [secondary coach] Joe Danna down to work him out, spent some time with him. He's a safety first, played kind of a hybrid star, nickel position there."

A versatile three-year starter with 36 games of experience, Kilgore brings the kind of athletic versatility that every defense craves. He'll join a safety room featuring veterans C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Geno Stone on one-year deals, giving him a clear runway to compete for a starting role as early as next season. For now, he'll learn behind seasoned pros and rotate alongside starter Cole Bishop.

And if you need another reason to believe in this pick, just ask his college coach. "Very familiar with that program. Know Shane Beamer very well," Beane said of the Gamecocks head coach. That kind of endorsement speaks volumes about the character and talent Buffalo just added to its secondary.

Kilgore might have fallen on draft day, but in Buffalo, he's landing in the perfect spot to rise.
