The 65-game rule leaves some players out who otherwise would have gotten my vote.

The race for the 2026 NBA MVP was one of the most thrilling in recent memory, a season-long battle where multiple superstars made compelling cases. As a voter, splitting hairs between such historic performances is the ultimate challenge. This year, the league's 65-game eligibility rule added another layer of complexity, leaving some deserving players off my ballot entirely.

After careful consideration of the full body of work, my official MVP ballot is set. It’s important to note this assumes the league grants Luka Dončić’s eligibility challenge after he finished one game short, having missed time for the birth of his child. The top of the list reflects not just peak brilliance, but remarkable consistency.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earns the top spot. While others faced injuries or minute restrictions, SGA was a relentless force all season. He elevated his game in the clutch, anchored the Thunder's elite defense, and was the driving force behind the league's best record. His two-way dominance made him the steady heartbeat of a championship contender.

In second, Victor Wembanyama delivered a sophomore season that defied imagination. Even with a managed minutes load early on, his statistical output and defensive impact were simply otherworldly, firmly placing him in the MVP conversation. Rounding out the top five are the ever-dominant Nikola Jokić, the spectacular Luka Dončić, and the indispensable Jaylen Brown, whose two-way prowess powered the Celtics.

If Dončić is ruled ineligible, Kawhi Leonard slides into the fifth spot. It’s also worth noting that, had he met the games threshold, Cade Cunningham’s breakout year would have placed him in this elite group. The depth of talent across the league made every vote count, highlighting an incredible era of NBA basketball.
