Big news out of Chapel Hill: the Tar Heels just landed a major commitment from 2026 four-star wing Kevin Thomas, who announced his pledge to North Carolina on Wednesday—the same day he took an official visit to campus. The 6-foot-7 standout, previously committed to LSU, requested his release from the Tigers' letter of intent in late March after the program parted ways with head coach Matt McMahon.
Thomas becomes the fourth high school recruit to join UNC's 2026-27 roster, slotting in alongside forward Maximo Adams, center Sayon Keita, and guard Malloy Smith. Ranked No. 79 overall in the 2026 class by 247Sports and No. 94 by Rivals, he brings serious credentials from the Sunshine State. A three-time Florida Class 1A state champion at Weston's Sagemont Prep, Thomas averaged 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 steals as a senior, earning multiple player of the year honors in Florida.
His recruitment originally boiled down to a final four of Auburn, Florida State, and Miami before he chose LSU last October. Now, he's trading Baton Rouge for the Dean Dome, where he'll reunite with a familiar face: Thomas won two of those state titles alongside guard Matt Able, who transferred to UNC from NC State this offseason.
Beyond the high school hardwood, Thomas has logged reps with USA Basketball and is set to attend the U18 National Training Camp next week. At a USA Basketball minicamp in April 2025, he measured in at 6-foot-6 without shoes, 190 pounds, with an impressive 6-foot-9.75 wingspan—the kind of length that makes him a versatile defender and a matchup problem on the wing.
For Tar Heels fans, this is another building block in what's shaping up to be a strong 2026 class under head coach Michael Malone. And for those who love to rep their favorite players on the court, keep an eye out for Thomas in Carolina blue—you'll want to be ready to rock his gear when he arrives.
