Our annual season review series begins with the ever reliable Bryan Rust.

When you think of reliability in the NHL, Bryan Rust's name should be near the top of the list. The 33-year-old winger delivered yet another rock-solid campaign for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2025-26, proving why he remains a cornerstone of the franchise.

Rust's season was a masterclass in consistency. Over 72 games, he tallied 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points, while adding a goal and an assist in six playoff appearances. But the numbers only tell part of the story.

The real magic happened in March. With superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin sidelined for extended stretches, Rust elevated his game when the Penguins needed him most. He posted a blistering 20 points in 16 games during a brutal stretch of the schedule, single-handedly keeping Pittsburgh's playoff hopes alive and securing a postseason berth. It was the kind of performance that defines a true team player.

December was another highlight. While the Penguins struggled to find their rhythm, Rust's steady play helped the team stay afloat. His leadership and work ethic were on full display during those tough months, reminding everyone why he's been such a valued member of the organization for over a decade.

Of course, the season wasn't without its bumps. Rust received his first career NHL suspension in January after an illegal check on Vancouver's Brock Boeser, sidelining him for three games. It was a rare misstep for a player known for his clean, hard-nosed style.

Coming off a career year in 2024-25, many expected Rust to be a prime trade candidate last offseason. With the Penguins in rebuild mode, his stock had never been higher. But the trade deadline came and went without any movement, and Rust returned to Pittsburgh for his 12th season with the team.

Now in his mid-30s, Rust continues to be the reliable, two-way force that Penguins fans have come to admire. With two years remaining on his contract at a team-friendly $5.125 million cap hit, he's proving that sometimes the best move is the one you don't make.
