The 2026 NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror, and teams across the league are shifting their focus back to the veteran free-agent market. For the San Francisco 49ers, who are projected to have the most salary cap space in the NFL this offseason, that means plenty of opportunities to plug roster gaps that weren't filled by rookies. And one two-time Super Bowl champion is already making his interest known.
Linebacker Kyle Van Noy, fresh off his 12th NFL season, recently told FanDuel TV's Kay Adams that he'd "really like to play" for the 49ers—specifically alongside fellow BYU product and All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. "I think they got something cooking over there," Van Noy said. "I know they love Joey Bosa, right? Because Nick and all that—I get that. But I would love to play with my little brother. That's my guy."
Though Van Noy and Warner never shared the field at BYU—Warner joined the Cougars after Van Noy graduated—the two have maintained a close friendship over the years. That bond could translate into a valuable veteran presence in San Francisco's locker room.
While the 49ers don't have an urgent need at outside linebacker, Van Noy could offer a cost-effective alternative to bigger-name targets like Joey Bosa. He's coming off a down year with the Baltimore Ravens, playing just 50% of defensive snaps—his lowest since 2015—and recording only two sacks, a steep drop from his career-best 12.5 in 2024. Still, at 35 years old, Van Noy brings championship pedigree and a wealth of experience. He wouldn't be asked to carry the load, but as a rotational piece and mentor, he could be a savvy addition for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
For the 49ers, adding a player like Van Noy would be a low-risk, high-reward move that strengthens depth while keeping the cap sheet clean. And with a familiar face like Warner already in place, the fit feels natural both on and off the field.
