The Arizona Cardinals' backfield is getting crowded, and according to ESPN's Mike Clay, two of their running backs might be better off finding new homes.
After signing Tyler Allgeier to a two-year deal in free agency and drafting Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick last month, the Cardinals now have a surplus of talent in the backfield. Veteran James Conner recently agreed to a restructured contract for 2026, while former third-round pick Trey Benson remains on the roster.
Clay suggests both Conner and Benson could benefit from a change of scenery. Conner, who carries a $2.355 million salary in 2026 with $2.1 million guaranteed, is coming off a nasty ankle injury but has a proven track record of consistent production throughout his career. His experience and reliability make him an attractive option for teams in need of a seasoned runner.
Benson, meanwhile, showed promise as a young back but struggled to return to the field after suffering a knee injury. His youth and the flashes he displayed before getting hurt could draw interest from teams willing to take a chance on his upside—provided he's fully healthy.
As the season approaches, it remains to be seen whether any team will make a move for either back. For now, the Cardinals have a logjam at the position, and the trade market could heat up as roster decisions loom.
