Mathis Albert is the latest gem in Borussia Dortmund's academy, a place that has helped cultivate some of the top American talent in recent years.

Borussia Dortmund's academy has long been a launching pad for American soccer stars, and the latest prodigy to emerge from its ranks is already making history. Meet Mathis Albert, a 16-year-old phenom who just became the youngest American ever to play in the Bundesliga.

On April 26, Albert stepped onto the pitch at Signal Iduna Park for a 4-0 victory over Freiburg, debuting at just 16 years, 11 months, and 12 days old. That record previously belonged to Gio Reyna, who was 17 years, 2 months, and 5 days when he debuted for Dortmund in 2020. And before Reyna, it was Christian Pulisic who held the mark, making his own league debut for the club in 2016 at 17 years, 4 months, and 7 days.

Following in the footsteps of two of the U.S. Men's National Team's biggest stars, Albert couldn't help but soak in the moment at one of European soccer's most iconic venues. "I was honestly just star struck in front of the 80,000 fans, in front of the Yellow Wall," he shared. "It just felt like history. It's a feeling I couldn't really even describe, because I was just so in the moment. I was nervous, but my nerves kind of went away as soon as I entered the pitch."

It's no coincidence that three of the best American prospects of the past decade have all come through Dortmund's system. The club has a proven track record of developing dynamic attacking talent, and Albert fits that mold perfectly. A South Carolina native who came up through the LA Galaxy academy, he's an electric winger with a keen eye for a pass and a knack for scoring himself.

While it's too early to say if Albert will surpass the careers of Pulisic and Reyna, he's already got one up on them—and he's just getting started. For U.S. soccer fans, the future looks brighter than ever.
