At 101 years old, Neville Sandiford of New Zealand has proven that a passion for sport can blossom at any age. Guinness World Records has officially recognized him as the world's oldest competitive croquet player, a title he earned by participating in an 80+ Golf Croquet tournament at the remarkable age of 101 years and 262 days.
Sandiford's journey into the world of croquet began later in life, at the urging of his wife, Joan. At 79, they responded to a newspaper ad for free lessons at the Wellington club. "As soon as I took hold of a mallet and hit one ball I knew that was for me," Sandiford recalled. His natural talent was immediate, winning club competitions in Association Croquet from his very first year.
He soon joined the Paraparaumu Croquet Club, immersing himself in both Association and Golf Croquet tournaments. Reflecting on his start, Sandiford highlighted the learning curve and his competitive drive: "I was very competitive and needed to see myself improving." He credits the supportive community at the club for his longevity and enjoyment in the sport, stating their encouragement was vital to this incredible achievement.
Sandiford's story is a powerful testament to the lifelong benefits of staying active and engaged in sport. It underscores how finding the right activity and community can lead to unexpected joy and world-record success, reminding us all that it's never too late to pick up a new passion and thrive.
