Sometimes the best move is a familiar one. For the Cincinnati Reds, bringing back a beloved veteran is proving to be a masterstroke this season.
The Reds, sitting atop the NL Central with a 13-8 record, have gotten a major boost from the return of third baseman Eugenio Suárez. After establishing himself as a premier power hitter in Cincinnati from 2015 to 2021, the 34-year-old rejoined the club on a one-year, $15 million deal this past February. So far, it's money well spent.
Suárez is slashing .270 with a .774 OPS, three home runs, and 11 RBIs through 21 games. His steady production provides crucial balance to a dynamic lineup. He currently ranks third on the team in OPS, trailing only the explosive young duo of first baseman Sal Stewart (1.040 OPS) and franchise cornerstone Elly De La Cruz (.874 OPS).
This trio perfectly illustrates the Reds' roster construction. De La Cruz is the homegrown superstar, a two-time All-Star and the face of the franchise. Stewart represents the next wave of talent, a top prospect making an immediate impact. Suárez, however, is the savvy veteran addition—the proven commodity brought in to win now.
His value was on full display during a recent series win over the Minnesota Twins. In a tight 5-4 victory on Saturday, Suárez went 2-for-4 with a double and scored two crucial runs. The night before, in a 2-1 pitchers' duel, his two hits—including another double—accounted for both of the team's RBIs, single-handedly driving in the winning margin.
With six multi-hit games already in April, Suárez is providing the consistent, clutch hitting that playoff teams need. After ending a postseason drought last year, the Reds are clearly pushing to return. Adding a two-time All-Star with proven power and veteran leadership like Suárez isn't just a nostalgic move—it's a winning one. His presence strengthens the heart of the order and gives a young, exciting team a reliable anchor as they chase the playoffs.
