Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is struggling in IPL 2026, having conceded 164 runs without a wicket in five matches. Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan suggests Bumrah is bowling too many slower deliveries, with his average speed dropping below 130 kmph. Pathan believes reducing the percentage of slower balls and increasing pace will improve his effectiveness.

Jasprit Bumrah, the name synonymous with unplayable yorkers and match-winning spells, is facing an uncharacteristic drought in IPL 2026. Through five matches, the pace spearhead has yet to claim a single wicket, conceding 164 runs at an economy of 8.63. For a bowler who has terrorized batters in powerplays and death overs alike, this slump has become the season's biggest talking point.

The concern reached a new level after his recent outing against Punjab Kings, where he returned figures of 0/41. This marked his fifth consecutive wicketless game, a stark contrast to the dominance fans have come to expect from the Mumbai Indians ace.

So, what's behind the struggle? Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has pinpointed a potential tactical misstep. Pathan's analysis suggests Bumrah has become over-reliant on slower deliveries, bowling them a staggering 44% of the time. This has dragged his average speed down to around 130 kmph, well below his usual threatening pace.

"Wickets from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling are very important," Pathan stated on his YouTube channel. "There is no major issue with his form, but the numbers tell a story. When almost every second ball is a slower one, batters can settle and anticipate."

Pathan's prescription is straightforward: recalibrate the mix. He believes reducing the slower-ball percentage to 30-35% and increasing the volume of fast, hard-length deliveries will make Bumrah's variations more potent and deceptive. "It is a very simple solution," Pathan added. "If he bowls more fast deliveries, the results will come. His slower ball will become more effective, and with his natural seam and swing, the wickets will follow."

For Mumbai Indians, who are struggling near the bottom of the table, unlocking Bumrah's wicket-taking form is not just a preference—it's a necessity. His return to peak performance could be the catalyst that turns their challenging season around.
